Wicked audiences will remember that Elphaba believes her biological father is her stepfather Frexspar. The pair share a troubled relationship, with Frexspar showing disdain towards his “daughter”.
Nevertheless, it is subsequently revealed that Elphaba’s biological father is actually The Wizard. Their link emerged following a green elixir consumed by Elphaba’s mother (Melena), which is thought to be responsible for her green complexion.
Because of these two worlds intersecting, this is also thought to explain Elphaba’s extraordinary abilities.
In the novel, Elphaba discovers her father’s true identity, though in the musical adaptation she remains unaware. The Wicked films follow the musical more faithfully, suggesting in the latest instalment Elphaba may never learn of her biological parentage.
Some viewers are only now discovering the family connection. One person wrote on X: “my gf only understood that the wizard is elphaba’s dad after watching the play a 2nd time, that’ s how rushed act 2 is lol.”
Another said: “Just realized in #Wicked that the Wizard of Oz is Elphaba’s actual dad and the movie basically tells you in the first 10 minutes.”
A third added: “It’s been like a decade since I saw Wicked. Is the Wizard Elphaba’s dad in the movie like in the books?”.
A fourth penned: “Watching wicked. Why haven’t we talked about how the Governor isn’t Elphaba’s real dad and her mom dead without saying anything?”.
The Wizard in the forthcoming Wicked sequel will be portrayed by Jeff Goldblum, renowned for his roles in Jurassic Park and Independence Day.
Wicked: For Good is released in cinemas on November 21
