‘Unsettling’ thriller that ‘deserves an Oscar’ available now | Films | Entertainment

An ‘intense’ thriller that has already garnered a stellar 94% rating is now available for viewing.

The newly released film Lurker is currently showing in cinemas across the UK, while US viewers can stream it on Mubi.

The film is the brainchild of Alex Russell, who has an impressive portfolio of successful television shows under his belt.

Russell has written episodes for the Netflix series Beef, Dave and Interior Chinatown.

His exceptional work on the hit series The Bear, particularly the acclaimed episode titled Forks, earned him an Emmy.

Lurker marks Russell’s debut as both writer and director for a feature film. The plot revolves around a young retail clerk who crosses paths with an up-and-coming pop star and seizes the chance to infiltrate the elite circle.

However, as the boundary between friendship and fandom becomes increasingly blurred, gaining access and maintaining proximity turn into matters of life and death. LURKER is a thrilling cat-and-mouse game perfectly suited for the current times, reports the Mirror.

This parasocial, paranoia-inducing film, driven by a brilliant score and standout performances, explores the intersection of online obsession and reality.

While the premise may ring a bell for fans of the series The Idol, early reviews suggest that this new offering promises to be more engaging than the HBO drama. The cast is headlined by Archie Madekwe, known for his role in Saltburn, and Théodore Pellerin, who previously starred in Becoming Karl Lagerfeld.

Critics have lavished praise upon the film prior to its debut, securing an impressive 94% score on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. One critique proclaimed: “A masterclass in social psychology and a slow-burning depiction of obsession, deception, fame, and fandom all in one.”

Another assessment noted: “It’s impossible to look away from the cringey and tension-filled situations surrounding Matthew, whose evolution unfolds in a crescendo of discomfort and menace that keeps the viewer hooked from start to finish.”

A further evaluation suggested the picture draws inspiration from existing works whilst delivering something entirely original. They wrote: “Morphs from the social-media riff of Almost Famous into a startlingly fresh and twisty new-age take on The Talented Mr. Ripley.”

Several cinema enthusiasts have already witnessed the production, owing to its staggered launch across different regions. One viewer, expressing their opinion online, remarked: “This film is as terribly exciting as it is deliciously uncomfortable and cringe. Keeps you entertained the entire time.”

Another contributor shared: “Profoundly unsettling, Lurker shows us not just the darker side of fame, but also the abysmal depth of obsession. Obsession with celebrities, with another person, with power and control.”

One individual even went as far as to declare: “A riveting and thought-provoking suspense film, masterfully written, with an outstanding cast that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very last moment. You’ll find yourself deeply connecting with one of the main characters, making the experience even more immersive. This film truly deserves an Oscar!”

Lurker is in cinemas now.
