‘Outstanding’ WW1 period drama fans say is the ‘best’ and a perfect 10 | Films | Entertainment

A gritty, emotional, and visually stunning war drama is earning high praise from fans and critics alike with many calling it a “10/10” and hailing its incredible battle sequences and powerful storytelling. Our World War, a BBC war drama, redefines how audiences experience the First World War. Far from a typical historical retelling, the series uses immersive camerawork, innovative sound design, and first hand soldier accounts to bring the war to life with startling immediacy and raw emotion.

Based on first hand testmony interviews and true accounts from soldiers fighting during WWI, each episode focuses on a different chapter and aspect of the war, revealing the human side of conflict through the eyes of young soldiers on the frontline. The three-part TV series first aired in 2014 and was created by Joe Barton and directed by Bruce Goodison and Ben Chanan.

Unlike traditional period dramas, Our World War breaks new ground with GoPro-style shots, first-person perspectives, and intimate close-ups, giving the audience a soldier’s-eye view of the battlefield.

The result is a visceral, emotionally charged portrayal of the war that bridges the gap between history and modern storytelling and features standout performances from actors such as Luke Tittensor, Jefferson Hall, Gerard Kearns, Michael Socha, Danny Walters, Dominic Thorburn, and Theo Barklem-Biggs. .

The mini series was inspired by the 2011 Bafta-winning series Our War which was also directed by Stuart Bernard and Bruce Goodison.

The first episode, set in 1914, focuses on the Battle of Mons, while the second episode follows the story of a Pals regiment in 1916, and the final episode centers on the mechanised warfare during the Battle of Amiens in 1918.

Many viewers have rated the series a perfect 10/10 on IMDb.

One person wrote: “Incredibly well done. The BBC do a good job with drama-documentaries, and this is a contender for their best yet. I watched it on release in 2014 and, 6 years on, have just watched them all again.”

Another fan called it an “outstanding series” and said it’s a shame there aren’t more episodes to watch.

Someone else wrote in an Amazon review: “Saw this on the iplayer last year, such a fab 3 part series! I bought it for my dad as I know he would appreciate it. He said it was the best war time series he has seen over the years.”

A viewer also wrote on Rotten Tomatoes that it’s even “better than most of the high budget war films.”
