Viewers are being encouraged to watch a gripping new documentary on Netflix that’s being hailed as ‘the most important film of the year’.
Cover-Up dropped on the streaming service on Boxing Day, vying for attention alongside heavyweights like Stranger Things season five, and has quickly captured viewers’ attention.
Running at just under two hours, the documentary dedicates every moment to chronicling the remarkable work of Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Seymour Hersh.
The 88-year-old American reporter made his name by uncovering government cover-ups during the height of his career.
According to Netflix’s description: “Cover-Up is a political thriller that traces the explosive career of Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Seymour Hersh.
“Urgent and deeply reported, Cover-Up is both a portrait of a relentless journalist and an indictment of institutional violence – revealing a cycle of impunity in the U.S. military and intelligence agencies.”
It continues: “Drawing on exclusive access to Hersh’s notes, and interweaving primary documents and archival footage, Cover-Up captures the power and process of investigative journalism,” reports the Mirror.
Behind the lens is celebrated documentarian Laura Poitras, who claimed an Academy Award for her 2014 work, Citizenfour.
Hersh himself guides this compelling exploration of his life’s work, revealing the reality behind some of his most significant exposés. The documentary focuses heavily on his probing coverage of the 1968 My Lai massacre, during which American troops murdered hundreds of Vietnamese civilians.
The journalist reflects on his discovery of the cover-up and discusses the personal toll of reporting on such a harrowing subject.
Since its debut, Cover-Up has garnered an impressive 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating based on 41 critical reviews.
The Arts Desk awarded it a glowing five-star review, whilst cautioning prospective viewers.
They noted: “Anybody interested in the history of modern America needs to check out this documentary, though a strong stomach may be needed.”
Social media has been ablaze with praise for the ‘masterpiece’ documentary.
One user posted on X, formerly Twitter: “Please everyone watch this,” whilst another hailed it as the “most important film of the year.”
A third enthusiast declared: “The best documentary of the year, the pure masterpiece, absolute must see!!!” Another viewer added: “One of the best documentaries of the year, COVER-UP, is now streaming on @netflix!”
However, some viewers identified a minor shortcoming with the film. One remarked: “It was good but needed to be an hour longer lol.”
Cover-Up is streaming now on Netflix.
