Sir Michael Caine is arguably a British national treasure and acting royalty. With an impressive career spanning over 130 films and several TV appearances, Caine began his acting career in the 1950s. He is widely known for his iconic roles in The Italian Job, Zulu, and The Muppet Christmas Carol. Despite his legendary status, he was not born with the name Michael Caine. The English actor was originally born as Maurice Joseph Micklewhite in 1933 in London. His acting career started in 1950 when he appeared in an uncredited role in Morning Departure. In July 1953, he later adopted the stage name of Michael Scott.
In 1954, his career transported him back to London, where he was informed by his agent that there was already another Michael Scott. Having to choose a new name immediately, he was in a telephone booth and looked around for inspiration. Caine noted that the 1954 film, The Caine Mutiny, was being shown in the cinema at Leicester Square that day.
Later in his life, Caine quipped on television in 1987 that, had a tree been partly blocking his view, he might have been called “Michael Mutiny” otherwise.
Caine first went public with his retirement plans in 2009, following the release of his crime drama, “Harry Brown,” but he reversed the decision and continued working until 2021, when he bowed out again.
However, the 92-year-old came back with Medieval in 2022 and The Great Escaper in 2023, when he once again vowed to quit acting for good.
During an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, he previously said: “I’ve figured, I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and it’s got incredible reviews.
“The only parts I’m likely to get now are old men, 90-year-old men, maybe 85. And I thought: ‘Well, I might as well leave with all this – I’ve got wonderful reviews. What have I got to do to beat this?'”
In November, it was reported that Caine will be offered a role in the next Now You See Me movie despite previously retiring from acting.
He appeared in the first two magical heist films but was absent from the cast of the third movie – Now You See Me: Now You Don’t.
Fleischer told The Hollywood Reporter: “I think that [Caine reversing his retirement plan] was only revealed after we were done shooting [Now You See Me: Now You Don’t]. But if we’re lucky enough to make another Now You See Me, we will definitely give him a call.”
