Netflix has just added a new film to its vast collection, already hailed as a ‘mastepiece’ period drama featuring an actor’s ‘performance of a lifetime’.
Train Dreams, available for streaming from 20 November, appears to be the latest high-profile title that is a must-watch.
As with most new releases, subscribers can anticipate it being available from 8am on the release day.
Like several major releases from the streaming giant this year, such as Frankenstein and Ballad of a Small Player, it has had a limited cinema release.
Now, it’s more convenient than ever for movie buffs to watch, as it can be streamed from the comfort of home.
The film is based on the best-selling novella of the same name by Denis Johnson. According to the synopsis, the story chronicles the life of Robert Grainier, set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing early 20th century America.
Orphaned at a tender age, Robert matures amidst the towering forests of the Pacific Northwest, contributing to the expansion of the nation’s railway empire alongside men as unforgettable as the landscapes they inhabit. After a heartfelt courtship, he marries Gladys and they establish a home together.
However, his work often takes him far away from her and their young daughter. When his life takes an unforeseen turn, Robert discovers beauty, brutality and a renewed sense of purpose in the forests and trees he has cut down.
The ensemble features Star Wars and Black Mass actor Joel Edgerton, William H Macy, Academy Award nominee Felicity Jones and Irish performer Kerry Condon.
After its theatrical release, Train Dreams has secured an outstanding 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes , reports the Mirror.
Critics have showered the film with acclaim, with numerous reviewers declaring it essential viewing for the year and generating significant awards speculation.
One critic declared: “Train Dreams is the most hauntingly beautiful film of the year.”
Another proclaimed: “Train Dreams is without a doubt one of the most extraordinary films of this year, the type that will stick with you, deep in your mind and heart, long after the credits roll.”
Additional reviews have indicated the picture could represent one of leading man Joel Edgerton’s career-defining performances.
One assessment stated: “In an age of spectacle and noise, Train Dreams dares to whisper. It invites you to slow down, breathe and notice the spaces between moments. A simply stunning film from start to finish.”
Another critique boldly announced: “This is one of the great films of the year. In time, it will become one of the best in a decade, then one of the movies that people speak of when asked what inspired them in their life. It is a masterpiece.”
Cinema-goers who have experienced the film on the big screen before it becomes available for streaming have expressed remarkably similar sentiments.
Taking to social media, one viewer wrote: “Phenomenal character study. Simple, yet compelling story. Gorgeously shot.”
Another contributed: “Beautifully melancholic tale that highlighted so many paradoxical aspects of life in a magnificent way. 10/10 would recommend.”
Meanwhile, a third remarked: “An incredibly poignant and artful masterpiece. Joel Edgerton quietly pulls off a performance of a lifetime. Clint Bentley adds another notch in his belt for delivering a moving film that feels like an intimate journey.”
Someone else outlined numerous reasons to catch it immediately, declaring: “Such a beautiful film. Absolutely loved the scenery and what a soundtrack, timeless. Joel Edgerton, with his amazing performance and screen presence, really took the audience on a trip with him through each phase of this extraordinary story. Be sure and not to miss this, this is definitely one to remember!”
