‘Masterpiece’ BBC period drama based on 1914 novel airs Christmas Day | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

The 1982 adaptation based on Agatha Christie’s novels will be airing on Christmas Day on BBC Two and the popular film has been hailed a “masterpiece”. Evil Under The Sun features a star-studded cast including Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot, Maggie Smith as Mrs Castle and Diana Rigg as Arlena Marshall.

The synopsis reads: “Investigating the theft of a diamond, Hercule Poirot finds himself in an exclusive Mediterranean island resort, surrounded by rich socialites.

When a guest is found murdered on the beach, it falls to the eccentric Poirot to apply his methods and find the killer.”

The film has been met with praise among fans who will get to tune into the drama over the festive period.

One reviewer praised: “Ustinov is genius as Poirot. Watched this many times as a teenager back in the 80s – never grew tired of the sounds, visuals & storyline.”

Another echoed: “Ustinov is, as usual, terrific as the Belgian detective investigating the murder of a popular actress. Ustinov is once again helped by a terrific supporting cast which features the late Maggie Smith (Who is nothing short of excellent as usual) and the late Roddy McDowall among others. The movie is also filmed very well with lavish filming locations and costume design.”

A third gushed: “Enchanting and entertaining Agatha Christie movie, the 2nd with Peter Ustinov as Poirot and the best of the six he made. Great acting by the famous cast who obviously had the time of their lifes making it.

Turning Cole Porter’s songs into a film score by John Lanchbery is simply brilliant. It should have been at least nominated for best adaptation score with the Oscars.”

“A classic adaption with great actors,” a fourth added.

Agatha Christie’s sleuth has received an impressive score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Evil Under The Sun airs Christmas Day on BBC Two at 3.10pm
