Joe Brown’s coat reduced from £130 to £78 ‘screams’ vintage Chanel

A textured coat can add a twist and some flair to freshen up any wardrobe, and tweed is a trusted go-to when it comes to something that is durable but also stylish.

Founded by Simon Brown in 1998, retailer JoeBrowns has the Maya Tweed Maxi Coat for £78, reduced from £130, saving fashion lovers a solid £52. This Tweed Maxi Coat boasts textured fabric, neat shaping and a full length that give it a heritage look, meaning it feels far more expensive than its price suggests.

In a burnt orange colour combination, shoppers can style it over a fine roll-neck and tailored trousers for sharp weekday attire, or with chunky knits and denim at the weekend. It comes in sizes eight through to 18, with the option of a petite and regular fit.

It is fully lined (with a stunning autumnal leafed pattern) and is a perfect wardrobe addition for vintage lovers with its collar and elegant button detail too that give it a modern sophistication. Lengthwise it’s 125cm for the regular fit and 117cm for the petite.

Because the coat already nods to old-school luxury, keep accessories in line with that look: think leather boots and minimal gold jewellery to match the button detailing on the jacket. Looking at it, there’s no denying it has that unmistakable “vintage Chanel” vibe – the long, tailored tweed silhouette screams classic couture, but minus a really hefty price tag.

Currently, a Chanel long tweed coat listed on Designer Exchange is retailing for £2,210, with a similar longline cut, softly structured shoulders, and understated opulent texture.

Chanel made tweed its signature in the 1920s, adapting the fabric from men’s sporting jackets and transforming it into something more elegant. This JoeBrowns version draws from that heritage with their coat’s elongated silhouette, textured weave and sense of understated glamour.

It’s not a replica, but the inspiration is clear and appears more couture than its £78 price tag would ever suggest.

Luxury tweed does come at a price, but other designs to consider come from Boden, who have their St Albans Fitted Coat for £299. While on the higher end of the fashion budget, this coat comes in a Navy & Green Tonal Check, Rainbow Blanket Multigingham and more, and shoppers can get 10% off using the code C7R7.

Another texture for the ages is velvet and White Stuff have the Karla Velvet Coat in navy discounted to £105 down from £140. Also available in a range of other colours, and has a funnel neck with a classic fit.

Shoppers at JoeBrowns have loved their coat, with one person saying: “Quality coat, terrific fit. So pleased with the excellent quality. Dressy & Smart at the same time, looking forward to the winter to wear it.”

It pleased someone else who said: “I feel like a hundred dollars in this coat, warm and lovely inside details.” While a third customer said: “The material is very attractive and unusual, which makes it stand out. I am really pleased with this coat, it is a good fit as well.”

One buyer said: “I am only 5’4″ so it is really long! But I can always have it shortened a bit. But very pleased with the quality and style also nice warm autumn colours. Not worn it out yet don’t think I will need heavy jumpers as feels cosy. A real bargain in the sale.”

The pockets were mentioned by someone else: “Beautiful colour and style. Hope the buttons are firmly secure as my other coat the buttons came off pretty quick. Only snag. Wish the pockets were just a little bigger.”
