Home Alone fan uncover iconic character ‘hidden’ in Christmas classic | Films | Entertainment

Home Alone enthusiasts are utterly convinced that Jesus makes a subtle cameo in the beloved festive classic.

The 1990 masterpiece has remained a Christmas staple for generations, with countless devotees capable of reciting every line from memory.

Under Chris Columbus’s direction, this Oscar-nominated comedy chronicles eight year old Kevin McCallister’s (Macaulay Culkin) mission to defend his house from holiday thieves after being inadvertently abandoned by his family.

Even as a treasured favourite, fans are still discovering new hidden details more than three decades since its original release.

A recent viral clip saw director Zane O’Gwin float the notion that Kevin’s elderly neighbour, Old Man Marley (Roberts Blossom), symbolises Christ, reports the Mirror US.

In a video shared on Instagram, Zane outlined his theory to fellow filmmaker Jack Mergist, declaring: “Old Man Marley is the symbol of Jesus. The first time we see the old man, what is he doing?”

Jack responded: “He’s salting. He’s salting the sidewalks.”

Zane continued by arguing that this sidewalk salting demonstrates the elderly man’s commitment to “serving people,” mirroring Jesus’s biblical purpose.

During Marley’s second appearance, Kevin declares “I’m not afraid anymore,” in what Zane describes as “prayer-like” manner, suggesting the old man responds to the youngster’s prayer, much like the Son of God would.

Sharing his third piece of evidence, Zane declared: “Now, the third time, this is when it gets really good. The third time we see him, the old man shows up in the convenience store, and Kevin’s trying to buy a toothbrush. He is signalled by a bell, and a bell represents?”

Jack then interjected, suggesting that it symbolises an angel earning its wings. “So he’s been symbolized with heavenly things,” Zane pressed on.

The religious imagery becomes increasingly compelling when Marley rests his hand upon the shop counter, revealing a bandaged wound across his palm. This moment appears to echo the wounds inflicted upon Jesus’s hands during the crucifixion.

He continued: “Now it’s becoming almost undeniable who Marley represents. The next time we see him, Kevin’s in the church, and he sees Old Man Marley.

“Now, this is so amazing. While the choir is singing ‘O Holy Night,’ they sing ‘Fall on your knees.’ What does the old man do? He stands up because he is to be worshiped; he is not the worshiper.”

The content creator then outlined how the film’s conclusion confirms that Marley embodied the “saviour” throughout, particularly during Kevin’s rescue from the criminals.

Viewers have been utterly stunned by this theory, with countless fans acknowledging it “makes total sense”.

One Instagram user commented: “First 10 seconds: ‘This guys full of it!’ Next 10 seconds: ‘Wait a minute…’ Last 10 seconds: ‘That man was Jesus!'”

Meanwhile, another added: “I remember always thinking Old Man Marley was symbolic in some way and this makes total sense.”

Home Alone is available to stream on Disney+ and Channel 4
