Gardening expert names houseplants that will ‘thrive’ in your bathroom

Some people have a love for gardening and houseplants but aren’t sure which types would do well in their bathroom.

It’s often easier to find plants to grow in the garden or other areas of the home, like the living room.

A gardening expert has given some help by naming the “best plants for your bathroom.”

Michael Griffiths, known online as The Mediterranean Gardener, is a brand ambassador for Dobbies Garden Centres. He shares gardening tips and tutorials on social media where he has more than 300,00 followers on TikTok and Instagram.

In a recent TikTok video, Griffiths said: “These are the best plants for your bathroom. Bathrooms can be tricky with different lights and humidity levels but for all types of bathrooms I’ve got you covered.” He then delved into his list.

1. Snake plant

For those who have bathrooms with low light and low humidity, the gardening expert recommends a snake plant or ZZ plant. Snake plants are “one of the most popular house plants”, according to The Spruce.

They are very drought-tolerant and have an ability to “go weeks without water in low and medium lighting conditions”. The home improvement organisation states that as snake plants tolerate low light they’re often seen in office buildings.

The Spruce adds that snake plants are available in dozens of varieties, with stiff-sword-like leaves coloured in green, yellow, and cream. It also described it as a “hard-to-kill plant” that makes it ideal for newer plant parents or anyone who doesn’t want to water their plants weekly.

2. Peace lily

Griffiths continued: “If you’ve got low light and high humidity then a peace lily or a pothos could be a great choice.” A peace lily is a popular, low maintenance house plant with glossy green leaves and white flowers called spathes, as per Gardeners World.

The gardening resource shared on its website: “Native to Central America, it thrives in a warm, humid environment and is perfect for growing in a bright bathroom. Peace lilies are easy to grow and relatively trouble-free.”

3. Aloe vera or jade plant

Griffiths next moved onto bathrooms with high light and low humidity and said an aloe vera or jade plant would be “perfect.” Aloe vera plants are slow growing stemless succulents with thick, fleshy green leaves.

They’re known for their medicinal properties, particularly the soothing gel which is used to treat sunburn, minor cuts and other skin irritations. Aloe vera plants need bright, indirect sunlight to thrive so a bright window sill or shelf is an ideal spot.

Crassula ovata, commonly known as jade plant, is a succulent plant with small pink or white flowers. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends growing it in a conservatory or as a house plant in pots of cactus compost in full light.

4. Boston fern, spider plant or rubber plant

The Dobbies brand ambassador lastly shared that a boston fern, spider plant or rubber plant, will thrive in a bathroom with high light and high humidity. Boston fern, also known as sword fern, is considered a classic house plant that grows in many tropical areas around the world.

Spider plants have thin, narrow variegated leaves that arch outwards from the centre, creating a fountain of foliage. Rubber plant is a hardy, fast growing houseplant with large, oval-shaped glossy dark green leaves.
