A cult-classic sci-fi is hailed by fans as “incredibly original” and one of the “most underrated” horror films. Cube (1997) follows seven people who wake up inside a surreal, giant cube filled with deadly traps. The prisoners possess unique skills that they must utilise to navigate the maze-like sections in a desperate attempt to escape.
The Canadian film, which stars Nicole de Boer, Nicky Guadagni, David Hewlett, Andrew Miller, Julian Richings, Wayne Robson, and Maurice Dean Wint as the captives, was reportedly shot in just one cube set, redressed multiple times to create the impression of a vast labyrinth. It was written and directed by Vincenzo Natali and reportedly made with a budget of just $350,000 Canadian dollars. It grossed almost $9million USD, according to box office tracking website The Numbers, representing a major success for the low-budget film.
The escape-room thriller spawned sequels and a Japanese remake. And while audiences point out its shortcomings compared to the big-budget epics of the genre, it has developed a cult status and is still held up as a classic of the genre.
One fan took to IMDb to shower it with praise, calling it “incredibly original”, as well as “absolutely riveting and engaging”.
“It will have you thinking for hours afterward. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes intriguing movies.
“The acting is good. Other than the girl who plays the student, I’ve never seen any of the actors before, which makes the movie much harder to predict than most.
“The air of mystery prevails throughout. The pace is perfect, which surprised me, given the limited amount the characters could actually do. And the ending.”
Another wrote: “While so many sci-fi films want to wow you with effects, this film does something more challenging–it makes you think.
“With its limited budget and digital effects in use even before Titanic glorified them, Cube still proves itself as one of the more original and intelligent sci-fi films of the last decade, with a cult status already going strong. It is truly a nail-biter.”
The YouTube channel Awful Films details the worst movies ever made, but also singles out classic horror films for praise. It included Cube among them, describing it in the title of its review as “one of the most underrated horror movies ever”.
Comic Book Resources also named the film in its round up of the 10 most underrated horror films of the 90s.
The film has a 15 certificate and features strong language and horror, so may not be for everyone.
Cube is streaming now on Amazon Prime.
