An ‘unhinged’ thriller earning acclaim for its shocking plot twist has just landed in cinemas.
Adapted from Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel, The Housemaid chronicles a young woman’s employment with a wealthy family who are hiding dark secrets.
The gripping thriller features Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney as Millie, a residential housekeeper, with Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar portraying her employers, Nina and Andrew Winchester.
The official synopsis reveals: “Trying to escape her past, Millie accepts a job as a live-in housemaid for the wealthy Nina and Andrew Winchester.
“But what begins as a dream job quickly unravels into something far more dangerous – a sexy, seductive game of secrets, scandal, and power. Behind the Winchesters’ closed doors lies a world of shocking twists that will leave you guessing until the very end,” reports the Mirror.
Beyond its compelling narrative, The Housemaid explores significant themes including class disparity.
Paul Feig helms the production, having released his other mystery thriller, Another Simple Favour, earlier this year. The Vampire Diaries’ Rebecca Sonnenshine penned the screenplay.
Following its UK cinema debut, audiences have been quick to voice their opinions. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes awarded the film a solid 75% score, whilst general audiences gave it an near-flawless 92% rating.
One viewer penned a glowing review, declaring: “Excellent cast and so many twists and turns that makes you want a sequel!! I didn’t know what to expect because I never read the book but absolutely loved the movie!!”
Another fan lauded: “An unhinged thrill ride ripped right from the early 2000s. This self aware, suburban, erotic thriller is a surprise delight.”
A third cinema-goer enthused: “Definitely the type of movie that keep you on your toes probably at the end you will make one of 3 decisions…buy the book; talk about it for a long time and recommend it to family and friends, love the genre or watch it again…[this] is a great thriller with a twist [that] keeps you interested.”
Meanwhile, others were left thoroughly captivated by the unexpected plot twist. One said: “Great suspense with a plot twist you didn’t see coming, and a second said: ” while another added: “So good, and a twist you’ll never see coming.”
