Dog breed has been named ‘3rd most popular’ for key reason

With their gorgeous curls, waggly tails and friendly temperaments, Cockapoos are a beloved crossbreed. They have quickly become one of the most popular dogs in the UK, with the PDSA listing it as the third top breed.

The crossbreed results from crossing a Cocker Spaniel with a Poodle. They are one of the oldest designer dog breeds, first appearing in the 1960s in the United States. Loved for their friendly nature, intelligence, and hypoallergenic coat inherited from the Poodle, Cockapoos have become incredibly popular as family pets.

I happen to have one myself – a bundle of joy called Gatsby who has been the perfect companion over the last nine years. So what makes Cockapoos so great?

Here are five reasons why I would recommend the crossbreed to others who are looking to welcome a dog into their family.

1. They typically don’t shed

Many categorise Cockapoos as hypoallergenic as they shed less than other breeds. Many have curly coats that trap fallen hair and stop it from falling all over the floor, which is very convenient if you hate getting the vacuum cleaner out!

This can also be beneficial for peolpe with allergies. Michaela Cragg from Joii Pet Care told us: “Although no dog is truly 100% hypoallergenic, Cockapoos can be a good choice for allergy sufferers – if they inherit the poodle’s low-shedding coat. Most pet allergies are triggered by dander (skin flakes), not just fur, and since Cockapoos shed less, they release fewer allergens into the environment.”

2. They are pretty easy to train

Both Poodles and Cocker Spaniels are highly intelligent breeds that are often eager to please – so combining them definitely works well.

Poodles were initially used as hunting dogs, which got them used to working with humans. Meanwhile, Cocker Spaniels have won Crufts more than any other breed, which shows just how brilliant they can be.

A word of warning though. While they may look innocent, they can still get into plenty of mischief like any other dog breed!

3) They are sociable

If you want to include your dog in your everyday life – such as bringing them out to the pub or staying over with friends and family – this is a very important factor to consider.

And thankfully for anyone with a large circle, Cockapoos tend to be very sociable. This has a lot to do with the breeds they come from.

Cocker Spaniels are deemed affectionate, people-oriented dogs that love being part of a family. They have been bred for centuries to work closely with humans, making them naturally warm and friendly companions.

Meanwhile, Poodles are also intelligent, social dogs that thrive on interaction with humans. Their playful and eager-to-please personality contributes to the Cockapoo’s friendly nature.

4) They’re active

If you’re looking for a buddy to go on long walks and adventures with, Cockapoos can do the job.

Cocker Spaniels are working dogs originally bred for hunting and retrieving game. This gives them a strong natural drive for activity, stamina, and a love for physical exercise. Cockapoos often inherit this energy from their Cocker Spaniel parent.

What’s more, Poodles, especially the Miniature or Standard varieties commonly used in breeding Cockapoos, are highly intelligent and energetic dogs. They were originally bred as water retrievers, so they have a history of being athletic and hardworking. This contributes to the Cockapoo’s lively, playful nature.

5) They love to cuddle

After you crash back at home after a long day out, you’ll probably want to cuddle with your dog. Cockapoos are a great choice for this. Not only are they lovely and fluffy, they are also super affectionate. What’s not to like?!

You should always do your research and consider your own lifestyle before brining a dog into the mix. They are part of the family and need plenty of love, care and attention.

If you are interested in getting a Cockapoo, you don’t need to buy one from a breeder. As the crossbreed has become incredibly popular in recent years, plenty of them have sadly been put up for adoption.

There’s a good chance you’ll be able to find your perfect match by contacting a rescue centre – and you’d be giving a dog a second chance at life by going down this route too.
