‘Dark delight’ comedy with near perfect rating on Film 4 tonight | Films | Entertainment

The Banshees of Inisherin, a dark comedy now hailed as one of the finest films of this century, will be screened on Film 4 tonight.

This sleeper hit, which swept the Academy Awards in its release year, has won the hearts of both fans and critics. Set in a tranquil Irish village on the west coast, the plot revolves around two friends who inexplicably fall out.

As one friend attempts to mend fences with the aid of his sister and a troubled islander, the other issues an odd ultimatum that spirals into a catastrophic conflict.

Featuring Colin Farrell as Pádraic Súilleabháin and Brendan Gleeson as Colm Doherty, the estranged friends, The Banshees of Inisherin garnered acclaim for its stellar performances.

It bagged eight Academy Award nominations and seven Golden Globe nods, winning Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Farrell.

The film also marked the breakout role for Saltburn’s Barry Keoghan, who portrayed Dominic Kearney. With a near-perfect score of 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, The Banshees of Inisherin has been lauded for its compelling narrative and lead performances, reports the Mirror.

One reviewer said: “McDonagh’s film is a dark delight, but also a dour revelation, as uncompromising as its subjects and just as resolved about reaching its own sour destiny.”

Another praised: “Brilliantly performed by Irish cinema’s favourite odd couple Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, Martin McDonagh’s latest is as dark and absurd as any Samuel Beckett play.”

A third said: “There are no missteps here, and it is, without a doubt, the best movie of the year for my money.”

Audiences were equally captivated by the offbeat drama, with one viewer saying: “Absolutely fantastic, dark humor, beautiful cinematography and really solid dialogue with excellent performances from main actors.”

Another added: “A truly unbelievable screenplay brought to life by an impeccable cast full of amazing performances with the obvious standout of Colin Farrell who gives probably the best performance of his career and an incredible performance overall, perfectly portraying the tragedy and slow decay of Pádraic Súilleabháin, beautiful cinematography paired with a haunting score and masterful directing all make The Banshees of Inisherin a damn-near masterpiece.”

A third fan said: “One of my absolute favourite movies of all time. I understand it is t for everyone. You’ll either love it or hate it. I think it’s one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen . Even if you hate it you can’t deny the quality of the acting. The premise is ridiculous, just enjoy the single scenes.”

The Banshees of Inisherin is on Film 4 at 9pm n December 28.
