Vet settles debate on the best dog breed to own as a pet

A dog can bring much-needed joy and love into a home, making life exciting for many people. However, when choosing a dog to adopt, it is important that you find the right one that fits your lifestyle to ensure the change works for both you and the pup. That being said, every dog is unique and special, and each breed has its own special qualities that can bring a sparkle into people’s lives.

However, there is one breed that might just top them all. According to a vet, those who are looking for a furry best friend should consider picking this one specific breed.

Dr Carly Fox, senior veterinarian at Schwarzman Animal Medical Centre, told Newsweek that golden retrievers are “the quintessential dog” and a “man’s best friend to the end.”

The gorgeous dogs are loyal and eager to please, but most importantly, they are great at adapting. Therefore, whether your lifestyle is one of adventure and activity or you enjoy the tranquillity aspect of life, a golden retriever will surely fit in easily.

Dr Fox also shared that the dogs are emotionally in tune with their owners, which is exactly what you would want in a companion.

She advised that the dogs should receive one or two hours of exercise a day, be around people often, and have several means of mental stimulation, such as obedience training, puzzles, or scent work.

While the dogs can adapt to pretty much any lifestyle, Dr Fox explained that golden retrievers can develop orthopaedic diseases if overweight. The conditions can affect the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. Therefore, keeping them slim is a must. 

She added: “For these reasons, I would place them in the ‘versatile’ category to moderately active lifestyle.”

The Kennel Club describes the dogs as “intelligent” and a “confident work”. However, as with any dog, early training is crucial for their development, and getting the right amount of exercise and mental stimulation will help prevent any sort of misbehaviour.
